Match Report
Last Tuesday Aylesbury FC’s premier division cup tie with Dunstable Town had to be switched to Creasy Park due to the Moles’ pitch suffering from the latest dousing of precipitation.
The game kicked off with the two sides line ups looking fairly strong and out for a good game. The two previous encounters with Dunstable resulted in Aylesbury taking the first, 2-0 in the league and Dunstable taking the second 3-1 in the cup, so it was inevitable the crowd were going to witness a highly competitive match.
In the first twenty minutes Dunstable applied a great deal of pressure, but Aylesbury responded magnificently with some great defending. The combination of Liam Smyth and Matt Butler, bossed the midfield and quashed many attacks from the home side, but were lacking the final through ball to the front men. Aylesbury’s wide men were taken out of the game as Dunstable played narrow and focussed their passing through the centre of the park. Dunstable nearly opened the scoring several times leading up to half time but wasted some great chances including one that looked harder to miss. Upon half time, the score remained 0-0.
The second half kicked off with the sides unchanged and battle commenced. Again some great work from the Moles midfield successfully ended several good looking attacks but were lacking creativity with the ball to produce the final pass. Aylesbury then started looking like they were going to make something happen. Some good build up play saw Kevin Mealor go close, followed up by a glorious chance from Kieron Scmidt that looped over the bar. The Moles wide men were then tending to be drawn into the centre of the pitch as they wanted to get involved in the action. This resulted in a scrappy last twenty minutes with a particularly congested centre of the pitch. Both sides were level after 90 minutes, Extra time to follow.
After the second break, Both sides looked much more lively and the game changed remarkably. The whole team looked determined to snatch the win from Dunstable, but the home side had other ideas . The first of the efforts came with a delightful through ball from the Dunstable left midfielder threading through to the front man who rattled the Aylesbury cross bar, leaving the whole ground wondering what it would take for either team to get a goal. Aylesbury responded positively and themselves too, rocketed a shot off the frame of the goal. Aylesbury then made a substitution to be more attacking. The in-form Nathan Graham was bought on for Liam Smyth, in hopes his presence may give the Moles the cutting edge. Dunstable then counter attacked after a misplaced pass fell to their centre half who poked the ball through the Moles defence, leaving Steve Smith one on one with Dunstables front man. Smithy stood his ground and although just about got beaten, Dunstable’s forward managed to scoop the ball over the goal, the stand and into the car park.
The spectators were now getting ready to get in another tea at the prospect of penalties looming large, when a moment of sheer brilliance and creative spark saw Matty Butler belt the ball through to Kevin Mealor who was the Moles stand in target man. He then held the ball up perfectly until Gareth Price ran along side him. He spun his man as if he wasn’t there and passed to Price who sent a low pin point cross into the path of Nathan Graham, who at full stretch stuck out his leg and poked the ball home on 118 minutes; this was follwed by a muliple flip celebration that would've made any olympic gymnast gold medalist envious of. This really knocked the stuffing out of Dunstable town and they failed to recover from this last minute set back.
An overall good performance once again by Aylesbury FC who remain in the competition. Weather permitting the Moles will be back in action this Tuesday at home against local and league rivals Tring Athletic, 7.45pm kick off in a 1st vs 2nd place league match. This will be one of the most important games of the season so be sure to come along and show your support for Aylesbury FC who find themselves pushing for promotion in the season run in.
