Match Report
Replay Tuesday 1st September 09 KO 7.45 at Haywood Way
Aylesbury FC took a rest from there league program to take on Southern League midlands division side Leighton Town in the FA Cup at Bell Close.
Aylesbury started the better of the two sides and quickly put their hosts under pressure the game was frantic as expected in an FA cup tie and both sides made chances in the opening minutes the best of which went to Aylesbury when a good combination of passes led to a shot from Butler that went inches wide.
The game then settled into a physical battle with lots of long balls and very little quality from either side, this pattern of play that suited the Leighton side better but made for a very poor football spectacle and apart from a couple of half chances for both sides the half ended much to the relief of the 156 strong crowd.
The second half started brightly and AFC started to pass the ball better had an early chance to take the lead when Henney was put clean through with just Clark to beat the usually clinical striker snatched at his shot and was easily saved. On 55 minutes it was Faulkner’s turn to waste a glorious opportunity was put clean through by Brennan and again with only Clark to beat somehow with a combination of shin and foot put his shot wide. It has to be said Aylesbury’s strikers had an off day in front of goal and both were replaced shortly. Both sides were giving no quarter but the home side started to increase the pressure on Aylesbury with the visitors back line struggling to contain the livewire Fenemore. They should have taken the lead when a cross from the right eluded everyone and Fenemore thought he had scored only to see Smith make an incredible stop from 2 yards out to keep Aylesbury in the tie. The game then had a long stoppage when Matt Hayward suffered a badly cut forehead which needed the work of both physio’s to contain, the Aylesbury player coach was then taken to hospital by ambulance.
This incident unsettled the visitors and they were made to defend in the later stages but any danger was snuffed out by the impressive Stevens. The two sides had definitely cancelled each other out continued despite both Managers trying to change thing by using all there substitutions the last chance fell to Leighton when the referee who was poor throughout gave a free kick on the edge of the area against Stevens. Aylesbury lad Aston Goss had the chance to become a hero however true to the finishing form of the day the strike went straight into the wall and was easily cleared by Boyce. Aylesbury will take heart from the fact they know they can play much better but it was another clean sheet against a very well organised Leighton side. The two teams will have another go at settling this tie on Tuesday night at Haywood Way.
