Match Report
Aylesbury concluded their pre season build up with a hard fought game against Southern League Midlands division Leighton Town. Should Aylesbury get past Langford in the FA Cup Prem the teams will meet again in a few weeks time. From the 1st minute Aylesbury knew this was a step up from their previous games as their opponents were quick into every tackle and therir direct approach was causing problems for the Aylesbury rear guard and for periods made it difficult for Aylesbury to get any quality possession and play their passing game demonstrated in previous games.
Aylesbury should have taken the lead when Price broke down the left and squared the ball to O’Farrell who somehow managed to miss hit with the goal gapping. To be fair to the Aylesbury front man despite this miss his overall hold up play was superb and he was able to win a high percentage of aerial challenges. Leighton took the lead when the impressive James Hatch dispatched a right footed low drive from 20 yards that beat Smith close to his right hand post 1-0 Leighton. The first half continued in the same vein but with Aylesbury coming more into the game and competing much better with their opponents.
At half time manager Mark Eaton made 3 changes bringing on Graham for Henney, Butler for Swonnell and Schimdt for Boyce. The home team initially again found themselves under pressure but soon the changes made began to pay dividend, Butler made some decisive tackles in midfield and with 2 wide players high up the pitch, fullbacks Stevens and Mead were seeing plenty of the ball as the home team started to look far more patient stringing together plenty of good passing and keeping possession. The equalizer came after a great move saw the ball shifted from one flank to the other with Price finding Butlers run from deep who finished with great precision. The midfield man then should have made it 2 when another good move from the right saw him steer the ball over the bar from 6 yards when everyone watching expected the second goal. Faulkner replaced O’Farrell and Corbould replaced Williams and the latter was desperately unlucky when his long range drive cannoned back of the inside of the post. Leighton wasn’t finished either as an attack from the left led to a another shot rebounding off the post. The game was opening up and entertaining the watching spectators and no quarter was being given, Leighton’s Aston Goss a local Aylesbury lad was caught high by Butler and then he himself was guilty of a reckless tackle on Stevens which led to the Aylesbury man limping off.
All in all a good test for Aylesbury against a very organised physical hardworking side who excelled last year in the Southern League, the teams unbeaten pre-season campaign means confidence should be high when the real thing starts Saturday against Hanwell Town.
