Match Report
Aylesbury cruised to a comfortable victory in their 5th warm up game of pre-season against Hellenic Premier Oxford City Nomads. Missing a number of regular players the game allowed a number of players to get a full 90 minutes without the mass recent 2nd half changes and fully test the strength in depth of the squad.
Aylesbury started bright with some of the best work coming down the right flank where Stevens and Price were consistently testing the visitors full back. Price’s direct style and old fashion wing play was a joy to watch and the first goal game when he broke down the right flank and delivered a superb cross that the defender could only turn into his own net 1-0 Aylesbury.
Manager Mark Eaton started with Kevin Mealor in an unfamiliar centre half position and alongside Matt Hayward he looked accomplished throughout, he was unlucky not to score when picking the ball up deep in the Aylesbury half went on a run that ended with him being unfortunate not to score from an acute angle. Aylesbury quickly added to their lead when another great move allowed Faulkner to bundle home on the goal line. Half time 2-0 Aylesbury.
Three changes were made at half time with Woodfine replacing the impressive O’Farrell, Kilmartin for Hayward and Boyce for Williams with Stevens switching to midfield. Aylesbury continued to press and were rewarded with a 3rd goal when Mead’s great corner was powerfully headed into the top corner by Kilmartin. The home side were so on top and were opening up the Oxford backline at will, Woodfine should have scored when clean through with only the keeper to beat but dragged his shot wide, he then had another chance with the goal begging was unable to get on the end of another cross from Price. Mead was then replaced by Gordon and O’Farrell was reintroduced in place of Faulkner and he was soon in the action when he broke free and with the goal at his mercy was scythed down, the official automatically pointing to the spot. Woodfine showed great character after his missed chance to comfortably convert the penalty for Aylesbury to go 4 up.
As the game was over Aylesbury’s quick tempo dropped allowing Oxford to start getting back into the game with less than 10 minutes left they grabbed a consolation after sloppy defending and right on the 90 Oxford grabbed another to make the score closer and somewhat taking the gloss of a very good performance. All in all another good workout with some great attacking play the only area of concern being the goals conceded.
For the last warm up game Aylesbury now take on near neighbours Southern League Midlands Division Leighton Town on Tuesday night KO 7.45 which no doubt will prove to be a stern test.
